Attachment Issues of Childhood: An Overview

This training is intended to give an overview of what attachment is, how healthy attachments form, and the negative effects when it is disrupted during the first two years of life. This training provides an overview of Deprivation/Maltreatment Disorder and Reactive Attachment Disorder, as well as it addresses interventions for children with attachment concerns.

Best Practices in Sexual Abuse Cases

This course will cover multidisciplinary team best practice in responding to cases of sexual abuse,assessment and development of interviewer skills, and complex interviews.

Child Abuse/Neglect Recognition

The purpose of this training is to give an overview of child abuse and neglect with an emphasis on recognition.

Child and Adolescent Development

This training is designed to provide an overview of child development from birth to 18 years of age, with an emphasis on the potential negative outcomes of abuse and neglect on physical, cognitive, social and emotional development. This training will also hi-lite programs and service eligibility for Nevada Early Intervention Services, along with practice implementation guidelines as to Child Abuse Prevention Treatment Act (CAPTA) in child welfare.

Child and Adolescent Service Intensity Instrument

This training will assist helping professionals to develop a working knowledge of the CASII measurement system for children who have a mental illness diagnosis. The training will enable the participant to complete scoring a youth on the six dimensions relevant to qualifying for and selecting children's mental health services.

Child Death Investigation

This training covers homicide laws, prosecutor's requirements, crime scene management, evidence gathering, dealing with the next of kin, and developing a victim profile. This last issue is of primary importance, as most murder cases are solved by learning important background information about the victim. Participants will also learn about different methods of correctly identifying and interviewing the homicide suspect.

Child Development

The purpose of this training is to give an overview of child development from birth through adolescence with an emphasis on the effects of abuse and neglect.

Child Development Ages and Stages: Birth - 18 Years

This class was developed to provide participants with a working knowledge of the physical, emotional, behavioral and cognitive developmental stages of children from birth to 18 years of age. The purpose, to enable better assessments and subsequent service delivery.

Child Sexual Abuse: Case Management for Ongoing Workers

This training is specifically designed for front line child welfare case managers/social workers working directly with child victims of sexual abuse. The purpose of this training is to educate staff on all aspects of sexual abuse, from the dynamics that perpetuate it, to working effectively with families to ensure safety, permanency and well-being for the children. This training will focus on the following specific to case management for sexual abuse: human sexuality, case documentation, the court process, engagement, working with non-offending parents, case planning, visitation, reunification services, safety planning and case closure.

Child Welfare Ethics and Liability

This course highlights common ethical issues faced by child welfare workers and further explores liability issues unique to the profession.

Clark County - Child and Family Teams

The purpose of this course is to educate child welfare staff on what a Child and Family Team is, who are its members, and how it functions. The training will focus on the benefits of using the team to effect positive change within the family of origin to ensure safety, permanency, and well-being of children involved with the child welfare system. This training places special emphasis on the ongoing use of the CFT Meeting process in accordance with the new Department Policies and Procedures.

Clark County - Indian Child Welfare Act

The purpose of this training is to promote cultural competence in child welfare practice by educating case managers on what the Indian Child Welfare Act (ICWA) is, as well as the subsequent ethical and legal implications for direct practice and service delivery. Special emphasis will be given to defining "active" efforts as it relates to child welfare service provision and the attainment of Indian Child permanency.

Clark County CPS Investigation: A Social Child Safety Intervention

A specialized social service training on child safey intervention that includes information collection and analysis, protective action and decision making related to reports of child maltreatment.

Clark County Domestic Violence and Child Welfare

The purpose of this training is to educate participants on the dynamics of domestic violence and the issues impacting appropriate intervention specific to serving families within the child welfare system. This training is designed to educate front line staff on how to assess for domestic violence throughout the life of the case, for the purpose of assuring child safety and Case Planning.

Clark County ETHICS-Social Work Ethics in Child Welfare

This training will familiarize child welfare workers and case managers with the NASW Code of Ethics and the ethical standards that guide direct practice. This training will also discuss legal implications and liability as they relate to ethical practice. Workers will have an opportunity to discuss application of ethical standards to some commonly encountered ethical dilemmas, in efforts to find resolution.

Clark County NCFAS for Employees

Training on the NCFAS tool is designed to help workers understand the benefits of assessment, prepare workers to use the tool to identify family strengths and needs, develop case plans, and identify needed services.

Communicating with Children

This class offers an overview of personality styles and the most effective ways of communicating with each style. The focus is on positive child/adult interactions.

Consultative Supervision

This course will describe the purpose of consultation related to building competency concerned with effective safety intervention, define and describe the philosophy of Consultative Supervision, and identify what is required/needed to perform expertly as a supervisor consultant.

Director/Home Care Orientation

Bureau of Services for Child Care will review policies and processes related to staffing, inspections, and disaster drills. The Bureau will review existing regulations, adopted R112-06 and R032-07 documents.

Domestic Violence in Child Welfare

This two-day training provides child welfare case workers with information about the dynamics of domestic violence and how it is related to child abuse and neglect. This information will help child welfare workers implement best case practice standards from the receipt of a report of child abuse and/or neglect throughout the life of the case. The importance of assessing for domestic violence will be presented along with implications for interviewing, safety planning, case planning, permanency, and case closure. Strategies will be offered for case planning interventions for victims, children, and perpetrators, which are required to protect both adult and child victims.

Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder: Facts, Diagnosis, and Family Education Model

This 3-hour training is designed for birth parents, foster parents, DFS workers and other community partners to learn about: -Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) Diagnostic Criteria and Information -Facts related to FASD -Parent Education Model, which will provide specific help for parents in the management of children with FASD.

General Infant and Child Mental Health

This class was developed to provide participants with a basic understanding of infant/child mental health development and to enable them to recognize mental health issues as they emerge. Further, it is intended to educate the participants on how children's mental health needs are assessed and subsequently where and how they are treated, in their own community.

Indian Child Welfare Act

The provisions of the Indian Child Welfare Act (ICWA) will be presented in this workshop. The critical processes of identifying children who may be eligible for Tribal enrollment and noticing and utilizing Tribes in decision-making throughout the life of a case are highlighted, along with the many cultural considerations that are essential for positive outcomes for child welfare cases involving children, families, and Tribes.

Lesbian Gay Bisexual and Transgender 101

This training is a program that will help educate DFS staff (and the greater community) on the skills needed to provide culturally competent services to the LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender) adoptive and foster parents. Moreover, the training will introduce child welfare professionals to accurate and up-to-date information about LGBT individuals. Participants will begin to gain a basic competency of the full range of issues relating to sexual orientation and gender identity.

Multiethnic Placement Act

Participants will receive an overview of the Multiethnic Placement Act of 1994 that was amended in 1996 which addresses the prohibition against discrimination in foster and adoptive placements.

Multiethnic Placement Act/Interethnic Adoption

The purpose of this training is to provide an overview of the historical perspective of the Multiethnic Placement Act of 1994, and as amended by the Interethnic Adoption Provisions of 1996. The training will focus on MEPA's three basic mandates of: funding, foster and adoptive parent selection, and recruitment, as well as discussion on how application of the law impacts direct practice in child welfare.

Nevada New Worker Core Module 1

This module presents the framework of social work practice in Nevada, the professional helping relationship, and interpersonal helping skills.

Nevada New Worker Core Module 2

This module focuses on families and child development. It introduces assessment and helps participants to understand the needs, underlying conditions, and contributing factors of families, and thus how to facilitate change as needed.

Nevada New Worker Core Module 3

This module examines the signs and symptoms of child abuse and neglect, and teaches participants how to conduct safety and risk assessments, and how to substantiate alleged abuse and/or neglect. Participants will also learn how to complete the Nevada Initital Assessment (NIA) summary.

Nevada New Worker Core Module 4

In this module, participants will learn how to develop case plans with families, and to develop effective documentation.

Nevada New Worker Core Module 5

This module will help participants to better understand the impact of separation and loss on children, and thus be able to better strengthen the parent-child relationship. The training also looks at placement, support for cross-ethnic/cultural placement, and reunification of families.

New Worker Academy

This 3-week training will provide a foundational overview for child welfare practice, laws, values and ethics, organizational structure, and the identification of abuse and neglect. In addition, the training also includes the application of critical thinking for risk and safety, understanding protective capacity, family engagement in case planning and case management, human development, and the importance of placement and permanency.

North Carolina Family Assessment Scale: General Services and Reunification

The NCFAS-G+R is a combination of two assessment tools to measure family functioning. The NCFAS-G (general) portion of the tool is used with intact families while both the G portion and R (reunification) portion are completed with families that are reunifying. Training on the tool is designed to help workers understand the benefits of assessment, prepare workers to use the tool to identify family strengths and needs, develop case plans, and identify needed services. The tool also assists workers in planning for case closure and step-down services.

Preparing for Court: Workshop for Child Sexual Abuse Cases and Other Legal Issues

This course will cover multidisciplinary team best practice in responding to cases of sexual abuse and other legal issues, assessing an allegation of sexual abuse when the child is pre- or non-verbal, overcoming a defense challenge based on memory and suggestibility research, preparing for and testifying in court, and ethical issues for child protection attorneys.

Prescription Drug Abuse Recognition and Awareness

Training and awareness of the growing problem of prescription drug abuse. Participants will learn signs and symptoms of prescription drug abuse to help develop case plans for families served through child welfare.

Recognition and Prevention of Illness in the Child Care Setting

Presented by Judy Fuss-Carl, University Medical Center. This course is designed to assist participants in understanding the spread of disease and what caregivers can do to keep themselves and children healthy.

Recognizing and Reporting Requirements of Child Abuse and Neglect

This class will educate participants on the signs and symptoms of child abuse/neglect recognition and outline the steps of reporting suspicions to CPS or law enforcement. This training also addresses the requirements specific to being a mandated reporter under NRS 432B.

Recognizing Signs of Child Physical Abuse

Dr. Neha Mehta presents this course designed to help child welfare workers learn to recognize signs and symptoms of child physical abuse including burns, bruises, and bites. Also included in the program are conditions that mimic child abuse.

Shaken Baby Syndrome

This training covers the medical aspects of this form of abuse, as well as the roles of the police, doctors, nurses, child protection workers, and prosecutors in Shaken Baby investigations.

Structured Decision Making: Risk Assessment

The purpose of this training is to assist social workers and child welfare workers in determining family risk through utilization of structured decision making and the Nevada Initial Assessment.

Supervisor Core Orientation

This course provides an orientation for supervisors of the New Worker Core and explains, in detail, the responsibilities the supervisors have in working with the new workers as they particpate in CORE including OJT activities.

Training Consultation - Clark County Home Study Workers

This is a 2-day training, which is part of the MAPP (Model Approach to Partnerships in Parenting) training program, designed to incorporate Home Study Workers in the preparation and selection of new foster and/or adoptive families. These workers will participate in a specialized 2-day training to build skills in using the tools of the PS-MAPP Program as facilitators of the family consultation process.

Working Safe, Working Smart

Presented by the DFS Training Unit. This course focuses on recognition and application of personal and workplace safety. Participants will learn to recognize safety issues both in the field and office. Participants will also learn interviewing techniques and strategies for working with the difficult client. A portion of the course will address post-incident victimization and trauma.

Working with Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender and Questioning Youth in Foster Care

This training was developed specifically to aid Social Workers/Case Managers in becoming more culturally component in working with the gay, lesbian, transgender and questioning youth in our foster care system. It's intent is to aid workers in understanding the differences between sexual orientation, gender and sex, while aiding the youth to understand themselves. The training is designed to help workers identify and assess their own personal, religious and cultural views and values regarding GLBTQ youth and develop strategies that balance personal beliefs with their professional responsibilities.
